Institutions of higher education and students with disabilities in Mexico

Abstract: The following work is based on research regarding the inclusion of students with disabilities at the Universidad Veracruzana. The paper proposes a classification of higher education institutions (HEIs) based on their degree of attention and response to the issue of disabilities on campus. We focus on four issues: disability models, the characteristics of special education in response to disabilities, the HEIs´ characteristics and their relationship with the issue, and finally, their classification according to their approach toward students with disabilities. We construct three models of HEIs: visibility/invisibility, normality/abnormality, and inclusion /selective inclusion.
